Crocosmias make excellent fenceline plants, their vivid red or orange flowers dangling from gracefully arcing stems.
In my zone 8 garden, crocosmias did extremely well occupying a narrow raised bed against a tall fence. They had direct south exposure, but summerâs intensity was mitigated by shade from a vined trellis about 6 feet in front of the crocosmias, which seemed to appreciate the midday relief from the sun. The hummingbirds flocked to the flowers. Moreover, I once stuck a crocosmia in the ground where the dogs tended to romp, and that plant also thrived, leading me to assume that these beauties are so hardy and durable that even I canât kill one.
